How to Read Your Meter

Understanding different types of meters

We collect automated meter readings for most customers, but you can also read your meter to track your usage. Two types of meters are available, dial and digital, to track your gas or electric usage.

Understand the differences between dial and digital meters

An electric meter with four dials, each pointing to a number or between two numbers, indicating the kilowatt hours recorded by the meter.

Learn how to read a dial meter

  • Read and record the dial numbers from right to left.
  • If a hand is pointed between two numbers, record the smaller number. (Zero is the highest number on the dial.)
  • If a hand points directly to a number, check the dial to its immediate right:
    • If that number is a 9, then subtract 1 before recording the number on the dial.
    • If that number is not a 9, record the number as is.
  • The reading for the example dial meter is 7-9-5-3.

How to read a digital meter

Digital meters are easier to read and can be recorded from left to right just as they appear on the screen. For example, the reading for the digital meter pictured above is 0-0-4-0-8.
