A home energy assessment is the first step toward improving energy efficiency and lowering utility costs. During the assessment, experts will evaluate your property’s energy use and identify upgrades that qualify for financial incentives. Tenants can schedule an assessment, but landlords must approve any weatherization work.
Landlords in Rhode Island may be eligible to receive up to $10k per unit to cover the cost of weatherization work. Tenants can request an energy assessment, but landlords must approve any improvements. If a landlord meets low-income eligibility requirements, weatherization work is covered at no cost with no cap on funding. Duplexes, townhouses, and triple-deckers are considered single-family properties under this program.
Landlords can receive an average 70% discount on weatherization work. Owner-occupied multifamily properties qualify for the same 70% discount. For market rate (not discounted rate) customers, the program offers a 100% incentive for weatherization costs where the building is 100% renter occupied.
Are landlords or tenants required to get an energy assessment before qualifying for incentives?
Yes, a no-cost energy assessment must be completed for both single-family and multifamily properties to receive incentives.
Is a Rhode Island Energy account required to receive incentives?
Yes, either the tenant or landlord must have an active Rhode Island Energy account to qualify.
Do landlords need to approve weatherization work?
Yes, landlords must sign a contract before any weatherization work can begin.
What energy efficiency accessories are available during an assessment?
If needed, tenants and landlords can receive programmable thermostats, low-flow showerheads, faucet aerators, and advanced power strips during the assessment.
