Frequently asked questions
What is ENERGY STAR?
ENERGY STAR is a widely recognized and trusted label on products that meets strict energy-efficiency requirements set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). ENERGY STAR certified products are third-party certified and subject to ongoing verification testing.
How does an appliance earn ENERGY STAR status?
Products can earn the ENERGY STAR label by meeting the energy-efficiency requirements set forth in ENERGY STAR product specifications. EPA establishes these specifications based on the following set of key guiding principles:- Certified products must increase energy efficiency
- Product categories must contribute significant energy savings nationwide
- Certified products must deliver the features and performance demanded by consumers
- If the certified product costs more than a conventional, less-efficient counterpart, purchasers will recover their investment in increased energy efficiency through utility bill savings
- Energy efficiency can be achieved through broadly available, non-proprietary technologies offered by more than one manufacturer
- Product energy consumption and performance can be tested, measured, and verified
- Product labels effectively differentiate products and are visible to purchasers
Where can I find the ENERGY STAR label on an appliance?
Certified appliances often feature the ENERGY STAR mark directly on the yellow EnergyGuide label. The EnergyGuide indicates how much energy is used to operate each appliance and provides an energy scale for you to compare products.
Although these labels cannot show which appliance is the most efficient on the market, they will display the annual energy consumption and operating cost for each appliance so you can compare them yourself.
